About this artifact

This image is a detail of a wood engraving depicting the Arctic whaling disaster of 1871. It shows the whaleboats and crews from the vessels caught in the ice, sailing and rowing out to the few whaleships still free. Those whaling vessels dumped their cargo in order to fit the 1200 stranded people on board and sail them back to Honolulu.
