When whaleships entered a port, they were examined to determine if any of the crew was sick with a contagious disease. If they were healthy, the ship was issued a certificate of health. This Bill of Health was issued in Fayal, in the Azores to the Brig Vesta on May 8, 1848. It is written Portuguese, as the Azores islands in the Atlantic Ocean are part of Portugal.
