About this artifact

This 19th century ship's medicine chest contained many bottles of remedies like powdered rhubarb, which was used to treat dysentery. It also included tools for dental extractions and a book titled "Direction For Knowing and Treating Diseases and Accidents Incident to Seamen," published by a New Bedford druggist named Edward Munroe in 1835. The medicine chest was made by Wheelock, Finlay & Co., Wholesale Druggists, New Orleans.
