This document was created at the U.S. Consulate office in Honolulu in April, 1871. It is the Desertion List for the bark Roman and lists the 17 crew members who deserted during the winter whaling cruise in the South Pacific. They all had been signed on as crew in Honolulu and deserted in Resolution Bay, in the Marquesas Islands. From family memoirs, we know that there had been a mutiny, but the captain, his family and a small crew had escaped with the vessel, leaving the mutineers behind. Captain Jernegan certified that they were all "in debt to the ship."
