Martha's Vineyard Museum Journal of a Whaling Voyage: Ship Virginia
Whaleships sometimes saw whales but weren't able to capture them. Captain Manter of the Ship Virginia noted in the ship's log that they saw a whale, but weren't able to go after it. He stamped his whale's tail in the log and wrote "to late to lower them saw at sunset or a little after".
