Jared Jernegan wrote this letter to his young wife, Helen, from sea on the bark Oriole in 1865. He was very lonely and had invited Helen to meet him in Honolulu in the fall of 1865 and accompany him on the whaling voyage he was then on. She did travel to meet him.
