Many whale men were leaving the business for the California Gold Rush at the time of this letter. Since Mr. Hathaway and Mr. Luce had provided money for the voyage of the Ship "Virginia", it was in their best interest to write to Captain Henry Manter. This letter served as a confirmation that he would continue to search for whales, and bring back a full ship.
