This oil on canvas painting depicts a whaling captain in his cabin with his nautical chart. The model for the portrait was SUNBEAM master Benjamin Higgins seen seated at a table smoking pipe, working on unrolled chart in the after cabin of the whale ship. A parrot cage swings above his head and a barometer hangs on gimbels in the background, left of the cabin window. A calendar next to the barometer shows the days marked off to the 25th of December. Other titles used for this painting include: "The Christmas Exile", "The Yankee Whaler", "The Captain: The SUNBEAM's After Cabin", and "The Captain's Christmas".
