The blacksmith made and repaired iron hoops for the barrels, the metal blades of the harpoons, and the metal fittings needed for ship repairs. He also repaired the try pots, cauldrons used for melting down blubber. The blacksmith was a skilled hand and his share of the profits or lay ranged between 1/50 and 1/160.
