Mystic Seaport
The galley is the ship's kitchen. Galleys were not located in the same place on every whaleship. Ideally, the galley was located midship where the motion of the sea was least disruptive. Most often it was also in the open air on deck, where smoke from the cook stove was not as bothersome as below. The galley on the Charles W. Morgan, the last surviving wooden whaling ship from this period, was in the Hurricane House. It had a cast iron cook stove. Gallies were amazingly small considering that three meals per day were prepared there for all of the officers and crew. This is the stove found on the Charles W. Morgan.
