New Bedford Whaling Museum
A social visit or friendly interchange between whalers at sea. When whaleships met at sea, they sometimes stopped to socialize and to exchange news and supplies. Whaleboats rowed back and forth between the ships so that every crew member had a chance to visit. Women would sometimes be transported from ship to ship in a gamming chair. Gams might last a day or several days. This image is from the film "Down to the Sea in Ships".
